UPDATE – RNC Make Arrest in Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(St. John’s, NL), April 18, 2018 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Traffic Services Section has made an arrest in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in St. John’s.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, just before 10:30 p.m. an RNC Patrol Officer travelling south on Hamlyn Road in St. John’s attempted to initiate a traffic safety stop with a vehicle that was also headed south on Hamlyn Road. The vehicle, a Honda Accord, failed to stop for the officer and collided with a west bound SUV travelling on Canada Drive.

There were four individuals in the Accord, a 17 year old female driver, as well as two male youths and a 19 year old woman of St. John’s, who was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver and the two male passengers received non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the SUV, who was the lone occupant, sustained minor injuries.

This morning, Accident Investigators arrested the 17 year old driver of the Accord in connection with this collision. She was charged with: Dangerous Driving Causing Death, Dangerous Driving Causing Bodily Harm, Flight from Police Causing Death, Flight from Police Causing Bodily Harm, and several breaches of existing court orders. The youth, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, was held for to appear at Provincial Court this afternoon.
