SIRT Conclude Investigation into Fatal Collision

(St. John’s, NL), July 25, 2018 – Nova Scotia Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded their investigation into a fatal motor vehicle collision that an RNC officer was present at on April 13, 2018.

On Friday, April 13, 2018, just before 10:30 p.m. an RNC Patrol Officer travelling south on Hamlyn Road in St. John’s attempted to initiate a traffic safety stop with a vehicle that was also headed south on Hamlyn Road. The vehicle, a Honda sedan, failed to stop for the officer and collided with a west bound SUV travelling on Canada Drive. A 19 year old female passenger who was in the Honda sedan was pronounced deceased at the time.

Following the collision, RNC Chief Joe Boland requested that the Department of Justice and Public Safety engage an outside agency to investigate the circumstances around this incident. Nova Scotia SIRT was requested and began their investigation the following day.

On Tuesday, July 25, 2018, the RNC received the final report from the Department of Justice and Public Safety that was provided by Nova Scotia SIRT. In that report, SIRT noted that there was no wrongdoing by the police officer in question and that his actions did not cause the collision. They noted that the officer’s actions were in line with training and standard operating procedures.

The RNC wishes to thank the Nova Scotia SIRT for conducting a thorough, independent, and non-biased investigation.
