(St. John’s, NL), June 8, 2017 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) General Investigation Unit is issuing a warning to the public following two vehicle thefts.
The RNC is investigating two separate vehicle thefts on the Northeast Avalon where individuals had their vehicles stolen at a gas station while inside paying for their fuel. In the first incident, the vehicle theft occurred just before 11:30 am on Thursday, June 1, 2017 at the Irving on Commonwealth Ave in Mount Pearl. A 2014 Red Chevrolet Cruz (Plate JBH-335) was stolen while the owner was in the store paying for fuel, the vehicle has not been recovered and that investigation is ongoing.
The second theft occurred on Tuesday, June 6th, 2017 before 10:30am at Irving on Torbay Road in St. John’s. The owner of a truck was inside paying for gas and came out to find the thief in the process of stealing his vehicle. He was not able to stop the suspect from leaving with his vehicle. He did not sustain any injuries during the altercation. The truck was recovered a few hours later by Patrol after the owner located it parked nearby. No arrests have been made and that investigation is ongoing.
The RNC is asking people to be vigilant and to secure their vehicles at all times when they are not occupying them. Leaving a vehicle unattended unlocked and with keys inside makes thefts such as this quite easy. It is not known whether the suspects in these two thefts are the same, however they are quite similar in nature and investigators believe they may be related.
