RNC Requesting Assistance from the Public

(St. John’s, NL), June 13, 2019 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) General Investigation Unit is actively investigating a break and enter and loss of a police firearm magazine containing twelve rounds.

On Wednesday, June 12, 2019, just before midnight, members of the RNC’s Operational Patrol Services Division, Forensic Identification Section and Police Dog Service responded to a home in the East end of St. John’s in relation to a break and entry. On arrival, officers were informed that the home security alarm had woken the residents, who quickly checked the home. They were able to confirm their home had been entered and property had been stolen.

Upon arrival, RNC Police Dog Service were accompanied by a member of patrol services as they promptly engaged in a track from the home in search for the fleeing suspect. The track began near the TCH Logy Bay Road access ramp on Logy Bay Road, ending approximately one and a half hours later in the Wedgewood Park area. The Police Service Dog tracked, while the handler and patrol officer accompanied, through many residential yards, wooded areas and wetlands. Subsequent to the unsuccessful track, the patrol service officer became aware that a magazine, containing twelve 40 caliber rounds, had been dislodged from their duty belt. Officers attempted to retrace the track of the police service dog, but have been unable to locate the magazine at this stage. The search for the firearm magazine is ongoing.

The RNC are asking the public to keep this in mind in the area of Logy Bay Road to Wedgewood Park. If you locate the firearm magazine, please contact the RNC at 729-8000. If you have information to assist in our Break and Enter investigation you can call the RNC or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can now provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at: www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
