RNC Make Arrest in Connection with Armed Robberies

(St. John’s, NL), January 13, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) have arrested a man in connection with a string of robberies over two days this week.

Shortly after midnight on Monday, January 11, 2021, Operational Patrol Services responded to an armed robbery at a service station on Freshwater Road in St. John’s. Two men entered the business and approached the counter demanding cash and cigarettes. One man presented a firearm, described to be a pistol. The men fled the location with cash and cigarettes prior to police arrival.

At approximately 4:10 pm on Monday, January 11, 2021, Operational Patrol Services responded to St. Clare’s Hospital after a report that a vehicle had been stolen from the area. On arrival, officers were informed that two men had approached a vehicle in the area with a firearm, described to be a handgun style, demanding the occupant exit the vehicle. The men fled the area operating the vehicle.

A short time later, the RNC received a report of an armed robbery at a bank in the area of Churchill Square in St. John’s. Two men had entered the bank and approached the teller presenting a firearm described to be a handgun. The pair of suspects obtained cash and then fled the establishment. They were last seen running to a blue vehicle in the area of Linden Place.

At noon on Tuesday, January 12, 2021, officers located the stolen vehicle in the center city.

On Tuesday evening, January 12, 2020, at around 7:00 pm, members of the RNC CID arrested a man and a woman in the center city in connection with this investigation. Officers executed an outstanding arrest warrant in relation to the 27-year-old woman. The 41-year-old man has been charged with three counts of robbery, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, three counts of disguise with intent, three counts of using a firearm during the commission of an offence, and breach of court order. Both parties are held to appear in Provincial Court.
