RNC Lay Charges Related to Dangerous Driving

(St. John’s, NL), June 1, 2023 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) accident investigators have laid charges in connection with a collision resulting from dangerous driving in St. John’s.

On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at approximately 10:45 am, RNC Operational Patrol Services (OPS) and Accident Investigation Division (AI) responded to a four-vehicle collision on Kenmount Road, near the intersection with Pippy Place, in St. John’s. As a grey sedan travelled West from Pippy Place on Kenmount Road, a westbound black Honda Civic changed lanes from curb to center lane to pass the grey sedan. In doing so, the black Honda Civic collided with a black Honda Accord, which was also travelling westbound. As a result of that collision, the Honda Accord was forced toward eastbound traffic where it collided with two vehicles travelling East. Both the Honda Civic and the Honda Accord were believed to be travelling at a high rate of speed.

The investigation into the event revealed that the black Honda Civic had been travelling in excess of 120 km/h on Kenmount Road in the seconds leading up to the collision, and the black Honda Accord was travelling in excess of 130 km/h in the seconds leading up to the collision.

As a result of the investigation, the 25-year-old female from Portugal Cove – St. Phillip’s operating the black Honda Civic was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. In addition, the 21-year-old male from St. John’s operating the black Honda Accord was charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle. The accused individuals were released from custody to appear in Provincial Court on a later date.
