RNC Joins Canada-Wide Awareness of Synthetic Drug Labs

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), October 8, 2021 –  Police services across Canada have launched a public awareness campaign to educate the public with regards to potential indicators of a methamphetamine lab, as well as the dangers methamphetamine and synthetic drug production pose within our communities.

Methamphetamine, also known as meth, chalk, crank, crystal meth and ice, is a synthetic drug manufactured from chemical ingredients. It belongs to a group of drugs called stimulants. Methamphetamine is only produced illegally.  It can come in the form of pill/tablet, powder or crystal.  Methamphetamine can be ingested, inhaled, smoked and injected.

Methamphetamine and other synthetic drugs, are highly addictive. These substances have permeated into our communities, which has a serious impact on community safety, contributing to crimes of violence and property crimes. The numbers of methamphetamine seizures in Canada has continued to increase since 2010. Methamphetamine has emerged as one of the most significant commodities within organized crime; from production, to importation and distribution.

The production of one kilogram of methamphetamine produces about six kilograms of toxic waste. This waste is usually disposed of through illegal dumping resulting in environmental contamination and health hazards for the public.

Some signs of an active synthetic drug laboratory are:

  • Suspicious activity, secretive behavior and individuals may avoid neighbour interactions.
  • Occupants attend for short time periods and at odd hours.
  • Chemical odours.
  • Garbage contains numerous chemical containers, glassware, bags full of soil or garbage are never put out.
  • Location has excessive security.
  • Evidence of chemical dumping grounds on or near premises (burn pits or dead spots on lawn).
  • Windows covered.
  • Odd items being brought inside the location – equipment, glassware, chemical drums, etc

Some of the dangers of a synthetic drug lab include:

  • fire
  • explosion
  • harmful fumes and chemical exposure
  • environmental damage and waste

If you see indicators of a methamphetamine lab:

  • Call local police immediately. If you wish to remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
  • Remain at a safe distance.
  • Refrain from approaching or confronting suspects.

The RNC request that anyone with information or suspicion drug manufacturing in their community contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can now provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
