RNC Issues Summer Safety Reminders

(St. John’s, NL) June 20, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) wishes students, parents, staff, and administrators a safe and enjoyable summer break.

With all of the excitement of warm temperatures and the end of the school year, do not forget to make safety a priority. The RNC is dedicated to increasing public safety and is sharing some reminders to help ensure this summer is a safe one.

Road Safety

  • Reduce speeds in residential areas, especially around playgrounds or areas where children frequently gather.
  • Pay particular attention to children walking or on bicycle as they may unexpectedly cross the road.

Personal Safety

  • Teach your child that a stranger is anyone they do not know, even if that person is friendly.
  • Teach your child never to enter the house or car of a stranger, and never to let a stranger into the house.
  • Children should know their full name, home address, and a parent or guardian’s phone number.

Online Safety

  • Monitor and understand your child’s online activity and keep an open dialogue about potentially harmful behaviour.
  • Ensure your child understands the risks of sharing images, particularly intimate images online.

Anyone requiring immediate police assistance should call 911. Non-emergent complaints should be made by calling the RNC at 709-729-8000 or by filing an online report.
