RNC Investigating Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision

(St. John’s, NL), September 3, 2018 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Traffic Services Section is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Sunday, September 2, 2018.

Yesterday, just before 3:00 p.m., officer’s with RNC’s Operational Patrol Services Division including Accident Investigators and Forensic Identification Officers, along with firefighters from St. John’s Regional Fire Department and Eastern Health paramedics responded to a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive and Ruby Line.

A green Chevrolet Equinox was headed north on Robert E. Howlett when it collided with a blue Toyota Rav-4 that was travelling west on Ruby Line and subsequently struck a third vehicle, a red Nissan Versa. Eight individuals were transported for medical attention, including a toddler that we regret to inform was pronounced deceased at hospital. The toddler was a passenger of the northbound Chevrolet Equinox. The woman driving Toyota Rav-4 remains in hospital in serious condition at this time.

Accident Investigators are continuing to investigate the cause of this fatal collision and are asking anyone who was a witness to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. Furthermore, investigators are keen to talk to anyone who was travelling in the area that has dash-cam footage between 2:40 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.

The RNC offers its sincerest condolences to the family of the deceased toddler, whose identity we will not be releasing.
