RNC Intercept Identity Theft Operation

(St. John’s, NL), November 10, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) have intercepted an identity theft operation set on fraudulently acquiring vehicles.

On Sunday, November 6, 2022, the RNC received a report of potential identity theft, and a fraudulent purchase of a vehicle. Officers determined that a vehicle was transported from Alberta after being purchased fraudulently using a male victim’s identity. The RNC Economic Crime unit was engaged to investigate the event.

As a result of a collaborative effort involving specialized services within the RNC Criminal Investigation Division, three males were arrested in connection with the investigation on Monday, November 7, 2022.

At this stage, a 32-year-old male from St. John’s has been charged with fraud over $5000.00, forgery, unlawfully possessing another’s identity, identity fraud, and failure to comply with court order. The accused was released to appear in Provincial Court. The investigation of this event remains active.
