RNC Engaged in Canada Road Safety Week: Safer You. Safer Me.

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), May 17, 2022 – Today marks the beginning of Canada Road Safety Week, a 7-day national campaign aimed at making Canada’s roads the safest in the world. This annual awareness campaign is designed to increase public compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives and reduce injuries on Canada’s roads. The focus of this campaign continues to be on the elimination of impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving, and driving without a seatbelt

This year’s campaign offers as a strong reminder that the decisions drivers make not only affect them, but also their passengers, other drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians with whom they share the road. Too many drivers make their choices based on the level of risk they are personally willing to accept, with a total disregard for the risk they pose to others. That’s why this year’s campaign theme is “Safer You. Safer Me.

During Canada Road Safety Week 2022, drivers are reminded to keep their eyes on the road, keep their hands on the wheel, keep their head focused on driving, and keep the safety of themselves and others in mind when they make decisions at the wheel.

“Operating vehicles in our communities today is so routine that we often overlook the significant power that we hold with a steering wheel in our hands. Even the slightest distraction or risk can change a life forever. Impaired driving, distracted driving, aggressive driving and other high-risk activity have already had tragic impacts in our communities. The best approach to promoting safety on our roads is by focusing on your own safe driving behaviours, refraining from the risky activity, which cause collisions. ”

The RNC is proud to be participating in this year’s Canada Road Safety Campaign, and we will be engaged in various projects and enforcement activities throughout the week, continuing our traffic safety momentum. While this public safety initiative is part of a national effort to help advance Canada’s Road Safety Strategy 2025 to make Canada’s roads the safest in the world, we are confident that our local efforts will help make the roads in our communities among the safest in Canada. We all play a role in diminishing risk on our roads, and the RNC looks forward to working together to build safe and healthy communities.
