RNC Encourages Off-road Vehicle Safety

(St. John’s, NL), May 31, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding both operators and passengers of the importance of off-road vehicle safety ahead of the busy summer riding season.

All-terrain vehicles are a thrilling and fun way to explore the great outdoors but improper use can lead to tragedy. It is through public awareness, education, and increased reporting that we will create a culture of safe and smart drivers. Please remember:

  • Youth under the age of 16 must be supervised at all times and must only operate an off-road vehicle that is suitable for their age/weight as indicated by the manufacturer.
  • Helmets are mandatory.
  • Never drive while impaired or distracted.
  • Use designated trails only and maintain a safe speed.
  • Off-road vehicles must be licensed and insured.

It is an offence to operate an off-road vehicle without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons or property. Tickets and fines can be issued and machines seized.

The RNC remains dedicated to working with our enforcement and community partners to increase road safety. Please report aggressive and unsafe operation of motor vehicles by calling 911. To report anonymously contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
