RNC Drug Investigators Lay Charges Related to Trafficking

(St. John’s, NL), May 3, 2023 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Drug Investigation Unit (DIU) charged a male from St. John’s with drug trafficking related to multiple substances.

On January 6, 2023, the RNC Operational Patrol Services Division (OPS) responded to Her Majesty’s Penitentiary (HMP) in relation to multiple packages of unknown substances that had been seized after a body cavity search of an inmate. The RNC DIU were engaged to launch an investigation into the event. Samples of the unknown substances were sent for analysis.

On March 6, 2023, The RNC DIU received confirmation that the substances contained within three packages were a fentanyl and bromazolam (better known as Xanax) mixture. A fourth package contained cocaine.

A total of 72 grams of fentanyl/bromazolam mixture and 20 grams of cocaine were seized, with a street value of approximately $30, 000.00.

As a result of the investigation, on April 20, 2023, the RNC DIU charged 37-year-old Phillip PYNN of St. John’s with possession for the purpose of trafficking in cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking in fentanyl, possession for the purpose of trafficking in bromazolam, and failure to comply with a court order.
