RNC Dedicated to Traffic Safety During Holiday Season

(St. John’s, NL), January 3, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) engaged in multiple traffic safety initiatives throughout the holiday season, promoting safe and sober operation of motor vehicles in our communities.

With LiDAR speed enforcement, traffic safety checkpoints, and response to calls-for-service, officers remained dedicated to removing dangerous drivers from our roadways.

Traffic safety checkpoints are often met with hundreds of vehicles, as officers assess sobriety, promote traffic safety and check for compliance with licensing and insurance. Among the over 130 speeding infractions found by RNC officers between Dec.28 and Dec.30, 2023, were five operators travelling 50 km/hr over the speed limit. One of these operators was stopped in a residential area of Torbay while delivering a food order. Each of these operators were issued driver’s license suspension and had their vehicles seized. Two operators were found to be impaired by alcohol under the Highway Traffic Act, had their vehicles seized, and were issued a seven-day driving suspension. Officers also stopped a vehicle after it was observed reversing from a checkpoint on Pitts Memorial Drive in St. John’s. That vehicle was seized, and the operator was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Overall, the checkpoints carried out this holiday season on the Northeast Avalon, Corner Brook, and Labrador West found significant compliance and safe operation of vehicles.

The RNC sends its sincere gratitude to the community for their commitment to promoting safe driving practices.

The RNC encourages anyone who witnesses dangerous driving to contact the RNC at 709-729-8000. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
