RNC COVID-19 Enforcement Unit Update

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), April 17, 2020– The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) provides a community update from the COVID-19 Enforcement Unit.

As we progress through this effort to prevent the spread of COVID-19, the RNC remains focused on education and working with our community to build safe and healthy communities together. Acting Sergeant Jarrett Morgan is the supervising officer of our COVID-19 Enforcement Unit, and he provided an update regarding the team’s interactions within the community thus far.

“Our team has taken on over 80 investigations following up on concerns related to non-compliance with public health measures in the community. We have completed over 25 home visits, sent out information packages, and have concluded over 50 of these investigations without charges. Our investigators have been not only met with compliance, but it is quite apparent there is cooperation around the community to protect the health and safety of all. We remain active with on-going investigations, and we want to thank everyone for your accountability, and for the uplifting support we have received so far.”

Our community has an opportunity to take control, limit the impact, and save lives across our province. We all have role to play in achieving our goal to flatten the curve, as it is made clear that the virus only moves when we move. We continue to direct concerns related to non-compliance of special measures under the Public Health Protection and Promotion Act to the online reporting tool on the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador website. Our front line members remain active in the community, working together with our partner agencies, supporting those who need help. We are imploring upon our community to do what we all do best, take care of each other. There is no better way to do so right now than to stay home. We are in this together.

We know that efforts to prevent the spread of this virus are advantageous for abusers. We are actively working to detect intimate partner violence in our communities, and it is now more important to report any suspicion of violence in our community. Our facilities continue to be accessible and safe for victims, and we can be contacted at our detachments by phone. Call 9-1-1 in a case of an emergency, we will respond and help you.

This pandemic also poses increased challenges upon mental health. Please know that we are here for you, and if you are struggling, we are always available to help. You can also reach out to the Crisis Line, or contact 9-1-1 in a case of an emergency.
