RNC Advising of Scam Reported in Corner Brook

(Corner Brook, NL), June 23, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) are advising the community of multiple reports of a bitcoin-related scam in Corner Brook.

The RNC’s Corner Brook detachment have received multiple reports of phone calls with a caller informing persons that their bank accounts have been compromised. The caller then instructs the person to withdraw the entirety of their funds and deposit the money in to a bitcoin machine in order to prevent their money from being stolen. This is a scam, and any contact by phone or other communication suggesting anyone take this action should be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.

These types of scams are intended to catch a person off-guard, and place pressure to quickly follow the instructions or risk consequence. If you are concerned about your banking, please end the call and contact your bank directly.

You can report to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at Report fraud and cybercrime (antifraudcentre-centreantifraude.ca). If you have experienced a loss, please contact the RNC at 729-8000 to report the event.
