RNC Responds to Complaint at Memorial University

(St. John’s, NL) July 6, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) respects the right to a peaceful and lawful protest.

The RNC responded to a request for assistance by Memorial University Friday night (July 5). The priority of responding officers was the safety of both the students and Campus Enforcement.

Memorial University had requested demonstrators leave the premises with the hope they would do so voluntarily.

Officers responded to the Arts and Administration Building and spoke with demonstrators to explain the risks of not following the order of Memorial University.

The RNC has a duty to enforce the law – in this case, the Petty Trespass Act.

Three students were escorted from the building by Campus Enforcement without incident. They are each facing a single charge of trespassing and will attend court at a future date.
