UPDATE: RNC Investigating Homicide in Labrador City

(St. John’s, NL), April 29, 2018 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Labrador West Region has positively identified the victim of Thursday’s homicide.

On Thursday, April 26, 2018 at approximately 3:00am, Patrol Officers from our Labrador City Detachment, Labrador West Region, responded to a residence on Pine Avenue in the town of Labrador City after receiving a report that two men had been involved in an altercation. When officers arrived on scene they discovered a deceased male inside of the residence. A 30 year old man, Vincent WARD, who was also present in the home, was arrested by officers and was charged with first degree murder. WARD appeared at Provincial Court in Wabush on Thursday afternoon and is presently remanded in custody.

Investigators have positively identified the victim of this murder as 28 year old Vincent Belanger DOMPIERRE of Montreal, Quebec. It is not clear how long DOMPIERRE had been in Labrador City, and homicide investigators are looking to speak with anyone who may have had contact or communication with him in recent weeks. DOMPIERRE, who was 6’6” and 300 lbs, may have stood out to members of the Labrador West community due to his size and stature.

Investigative teams from St. John’s and Corner Brook are currently in Labrador West to assist in this homicide investigation. We are continuing to work with the office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death.

Investigators believe that the victim and the accused are known to one another and there is no threat to public safety.

Anyone who has any information pertaining to this Homicide is asked to contact the RNC in Labrador City at 709-944-7602 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can now provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
