RNC Launches Online Purchase Safe Exchange Zones

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), November 26, 2019 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), in partnership with the city of Mount Pearl municipal enforcement, and the municipalities in which our detachments are located, are proud to officially launch Online Purchasing Safe Exchange Zones. Located on the parking lot of each RNC detachment throughout the province, these zones provide two parking spaces near the entrance of our public buildings where those who are exchanging goods through online services can meet to complete a transaction.

Not everyone is comfortable with exchanging goods through online sources at their residence, or meeting in unfamiliar environments. Also, utilizing online sources to purchase goods often invokes the fear of fraudulent activity or theft. With these concerns in mind, Cst. Michael Hollett worked with Mount Pearl municipal enforcement officer, Cst. Danielle Greavette, to initiate the concept of online purchase safe exchange zones, which are used today by police services across Canada.

By attending our online purchasing safe exchange zones, not only are you near the entrance to a police headquarters, where there is high police presence and CCTV surveillance, you can actually utilize our headquarters public access areas to make an exchange. This will allow consumers the ability to ensure they are getting the goods they have pursued, and those selling goods can confirm they have received the agreed upon monetary value in a controlled environment.

We invite everyone to use the online purchasing safe exchange zone parking spaces located in the parking lot of our Provincial Headquarters in St. John’s, as well as our detachment headquarters in Mount Pearl, Conception Bay South, Corner Brook and Labrador City. These spaces are painted orange, and can be found with signage. It is strong community partnerships that bring these initiatives to reality, and we wish to thank the municipalities involved, and the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador for their assistance in implementing this project.
