RNC Make Arrest Related to Public Health Protection

(Corner Brook, NL), March 25, 2020– The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) have made an arrest in relation to the Public Health Protection and Promotions Act (PHPP) in Corner Brook, NL.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, March 24, 2020, RNC operational patrol service division followed up on reports related to a woman arriving from outside of the province failing to self-isolate. The woman was located by officers in a public place, at which times officers confirmed the woman had arrived from outside the province within the past 48 hours. Officers proceeded to educate the woman on current regulations in effect related to the public health emergency. Officers continued efforts to communicate with the woman after being met with noncompliance. Further attempts to achieve cooperation were unsuccessful, and the woman was placed under arrest.

The 53 year old woman was charged with failure to comply with a special measures order under the PHPP, and was held in custody to appear in court.

The RNC is dedicated to working with the community, focused on education and awareness of current regulations and directives related to prevention of the spread of COVID-19. By banding together in this effort to mitigate risk, we can prevent the devastating effects of this virus on our community. We have been met with overwhelming support, for which we send heartfelt thanks. Compliance with the evidence based guidance from officials is vital to minimal impact on our community. Actions which will put our community’s health and safety at risk will not be tolerated.
