RNC Actively Investigating Homicide in St. John’s

(St. John’s, NL), July 8, 2020 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit’s (MCU) investigation in to a homicide in St. John’s on Sunday remains active.

On Sunday, July 5, 2020, shortly after 4:00 am, members of the RNC’s Operational Patrol Services responded to the area of Craigmillar Avenue, St. John’s, regarding a report of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers located a male who was deceased, then proceeded to contain and secure the area. The deceased male has been identified as 47 year old, James Cody, of Paradise. The Chief Medical Examiner has confirmed the cause of Mr. Cody’s death to be homicide by gunshot wound. Mr. Cody’s vehicle, a red Jeep Cherokee, was located at the scene of the homicide.

A Major Case Management Team assembled within the Criminal Investigation Division are actively gathering information, and have identified suspects in this case. There have been no arrests made in relation to this investigation. At this stage we are not able to discuss further details or investigative techniques in the interest of protecting the integrity of the investigation.

Investigators do not perceive further public safety concerns, as this was not a random act, and the parties involved were believed to be known to each other. We ask that anybody who has recently had dealings with Mr. Cody contact investigators, as we continue to piece together what led to Mr. Cody’s death on Sunday morning.

Investigators continue to seek CCTV or dash camera footage in the area prior to the police response.
