RNC Police Service Dog Retirement and Swearing-In

(St. John’s, NL), June 15, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Police Dog Services (PDS) is retiring Police Service Dog Dali, and swearing-in new Police Service Dog, Seaforce.

In September of 2018, the RNC’s Police Dog Services welcomed its newest Police Service Dog (PSD) and handler, Cst. Pat McDonald and PSD “Dali”. Today we are honouring Dali as she retires from the RNC due to a career ending condition, for which she was forced to have surgery in January of 2021. Dali, a purebred German Shepheard, was bred and trained through the RCMP’s Police Service Dog Training program. Dali specialized in detecting explosives, and became known for her high energy and exceptional performance during her time serving our communities. PSD Dali was the first female police dog in the RNC’s history, and she was donated by local businessperson, Mr. Jim Hynes.

Mr. Hynes has been very involved with the RNC’s Police Dog Services since 2015 and has made major contributions to the unit in an effort to help the RNC enhance how we respond to calls requiring police dogs. Mr. Hynes has a passion for dogs, and Dali was named after one his own dogs. Mr. Hynes has provided the latest in GPS tracking technology for the dogs and the handlers, FLIR Thermal Imaging cameras, and has had state of the art dog kennels built, with help from other generous community donors, at the handler’s private residences to securely house the dogs when off-duty. Dali will be officially retired today, and now lives with Mr. Hynes at his home.

As we wish Dali a happy and healthy retirement, we are welcoming the newest member of our Police Dog Service team, Seaforce, who will be assigned to handler Cst. Pat McDonald.

Seaforce is our second female PSD, and is also a product of the RCMP’s program. At just over two years old, Seaforce has been operational with the RNC since late April of this year, and has already shown an innate sense of focus and drive. Seaforce is a 70 pound purebred German Shepheard, and will specialize in explosive detection. Seaforce has quickly grown to love her new family, especially her new sister, Eva, the daughter of Constables Pat and Renee McDonald. With the swearing-in of Seaforce, she has officially joined the police service here at the RNC, and we look forward to her focus and precision going to work to support the safety and health of our communities.

Seaforce was donated to the RNC by Barry Hynes and the team at Sea-Force Diving Ltd. here in St. John’s. It is these community partnerships which support specialized services that promote professionalism and teamwork throughout our organization.
