RNC Make Arrest In Cody Homicide

(St. John’s, NL), June 30, 2020 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit (MCU) have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the homicide of James CODY.

On Sunday, July 5, 2020, shortly after 4:00 am, members of the RNC’s Operational Patrol Services Division responded to the area of Craigmiller Avenue, St. John’s, to reports of unknown trouble in the area. Upon arrival, officers located a male who was deceased. The deceased was identified as James CODY of Paradise. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined the cause of death to be homicide as a result of a gunshot wound.

As a result of an extensive and complex investigation in to the events that led to Mr. CODY’s death, RNC MCU have arrested 44-year-old Kurt CHURCHILL in connection with the homicide. Officers with RNC’s Criminal Investigation Division worked closely with Toronto Police Service yesterday evening in Toronto, Ontario, where CHURCHILL was arrested without incident.

CHURCHILL will be transported to St. John’s where he will appear in Provincial Court in relation to the following charges:

  • Murder
  • Using a firearm in the commission of an offence
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Possession of an unauthorized firearm
  • Possession of a prohibited firearm
  • Tampering with the serial number of a firearm
