RNC Launch Stella’s Wellness Corner

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), July 23, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC), in partnership with Vale, are launching Stella’s Wellness Corner at RNC Provincial Headquarters.

The RNC remains committed to the wellness and safety of its employees, and recognizes that prevention of injury is the first step to effecting a safe and healthy environment. The inability to find a space free from work-related duties and spaces can have a significant impact on our mental health of employees. Developing a space within the workplace which is free of any work-related activity is essential to allowing employees to remove themselves from the workplace, and to focus on their wellness and safety, and is proven to be an effective method of injury prevention.

Through a partnership with Vale, the RNC is proud to launch Stella’s Wellness Corner at RNC Provincial Headquarters in St. John’s. Outfitted with comfortable furniture, and designed to create a calming feel through the use of colour, plants, and artwork. This space will provide our employees with the ability to remove themselves from the workplace, promoting focus on their wellness.

At Vale we believe that by taking proactive actions to address mental illness, organizations can make significant contributions to the wellness of Canadians. As one of these initiatives, we have created a Green Room at both our sites in the province – Voisey’s Bay and Long Harbour – where our employees can come and sit, relax and focus on their thoughts without interruption from the day-to-day activities of their job. Recently our team in Long Harbour benefitted from a visit by Cst. Fagan and Stella and this visit was very well received and their contribution to mental health wellness in the community is to be commended. As part of Vale’s ongoing commitment to mental health wellness, we are very proud to partner with the RNC for their first “Stella’s Wellness Corner” for the RNC and their workforce in NL.”

Peter Prinsloo, General Manager, Vale’s Long Harbour Operations.

The RNC has made great strides in mental health and wellness for employees in recent years, and we have been able to foster partnerships in our community to support our efforts on that front. With the introduction of Sam Burke as Safety and Wellness Strategist, we have a path forward and a plan in place to prevent psychological injuries in the workplace. We have a Mental Health Mobile Crisis Response Team on site, in addition to our newest initiatives; RNC Support Dog Services, Equine Therapy for first responders, Chaplaincy Program, and Peer Support Program. As we progress, we see how this strategy has begun to shift perspective. We are proud to launch Stella’s Wellness Corner in partnership with community leaders, Vale. Vale’s Green Room initiative is the basis of Stella’s Wellness Corner, recognizing the value in having a designated safe space, which is accessible to all employees, that removes an employee from the work environment. Policing is complex and unpredictable, and this space will always be here to take the time we all need to step away and release, without interruption from the workplace.”

Chief Joseph Boland, M.O.M, Royal Newfoundland Constabulary

It is partnerships, such as this one with Vale, which help to promote safe and healthy communities. This support of injury prevention, overall wellness and safety will be felt throughout the communities we serve. We are truly in this together.
