RNC Lay Charges After Capital City Weapons Offence

(St. John’s, NL), August 11, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit (MCU) have laid charges after an incident of shots fired in St. John’s.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, just after 10:00 pm, The RNC Operational Patrol Services Division (OPS) and Police Dog Service (PDS) responded to reports of gunshots fired in a west-end neighbourhood of St. John’s. Upon arrival, officers contained the area, and began gathering information. A man was located in the area with injuries consistent with gunshot wounds, which were believed to be non-life threatening. He was transported to a hospital to be treated for the injuries.

In the afternoon of Monday, August 9, 2021, as a result of a search warrant being executed at a residence, investigators arrested a 42-year-old man from St. John’s in connection with the incident. The man was charged with unauthorized possession of a firearm, possession of a firearm knowing it is unauthorized, trafficking in weapons, breach of firearms regulations and breach of firearms prohibition order. He was held in custody to appear in provincial court.

 

The investigation remains active, and investigators continue to seek CCTV or dash camera footage in the area of Harris Road, St. John’s, and any information related to the incident. The RNC does not believe this to be a random incident.
