RNC Investigating Assault and Possible Weapons Offence at Downtown Restaurant

(St. John’s, NL), August 19, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Major Crime Unit (MCU) are investigating an assault and possible weapons offence at a restaurant in downtown St. John’s, which occurred overnight.

On Thursday, August 19, 2021, shortly after 3:00 am, officers with the RNC Operational Patrol Services (OPS) responded to a restaurant located on Water Street in St. John’s following a report of a disturbance at the establishment. On arrival, officers located a male who had visible injuries. The other person involved in the disturbance had left the area prior to police arrival.

The responding officers’ investigation into the incident revealed that the injured male was assaulted by another male inside the restaurant. The suspect male also pulled out what is believed to be a firearm, pointed the weapon at the victim, and then used the weapon to assault the victim.

At this stage, investigators with the RNC MCU are seeking any information related to the event which may assist the investigation. It is believed that the suspect male was with another male and a female in the restaurant. The suspect is described as a heavy-set black male, tall in stature, with a bald head and dark beard. He was wearing a dark jacket with white trim, a dark T-shirt with white and red lettering, jeans, and eye-glasses.

The RNC MCU ask that anyone who may have information to assist the investigation, or with video footage in that area around the time of the incident, contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
