Hurricane Larry – RNC Community Update

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is busy preparing for the incoming weather event, Hurricane Larry, which is scheduled to touch upon the shores of Newfoundland and Labrador Friday evening, September 10, 2021. The event is projected to carry from late Friday evening on to early Saturday morning, September 11, 2021.

As part of our preparations, the RNC has ensured that the generators supporting its Headquarters have sufficient fuel, and tests have been run on an alternate communications center to receive calls for service if needed. In addition, all patrol units will be prepared to revert to using cell phones for communication should any radio interference occur. All police units will be fully fueled by tomorrow evening to avoid obstacles of potential delays in ability to procure fuel. The RNC will keep the community apprised of any safety concerns as the weather event passes through the province. The RNC Emergency Management Unit will maintain contact with the Provincial Emergency Operations Center, which connects the vast front line emergency services in the province, to best prepare as the weather event develops. Please stay tuned to RNC social media platforms for prompt information (Twitter: @RNC_PoliceNL).

The patrol officers assigned for night shift on Friday will be attentive to emergent matters throughout our communities.  If you have an emergency, please dial 9-1-1. It is an emergency if someone’s health, safety, or property is in immediate danger, or there is a crime in progress.

In a case where the 9-1-1 service is disturbed, please contact your local police service directly in an emergency during this weather event.

With appropriate preparation, a severe weather event will pass us by without incident, and we will touch on some points of preparation, harm reduction and self-care that will promote the safety and health of community in to this weekend.

If you will be using illicit drugs through the weather event, please seek a free naloxone kit. A naloxone kit can reverse the effects of an overdose and save a life. Please follow the link below to locate a free naloxone kit within your community.

As this weather event may cause power outage and loss of communication, we ask anybody who does not feel safe in their place of residence to contact family, friends, or one of the many community groups who can provide support to your safety. The RNC will be available to provide support to anyone experiencing abuse in our communities. Please contact 9-1-1 in a case of an emergency.

A severe weather event can cause strains on our mental health. If you are experiencing crisis, please contact the Newfoundland and Labrador Mental Health Crisis Line at 1-888-737-4668. The RNC Mental Health Mobile Crisis Response Team will also be available to respond in case of mental health crisis.  Please ensure you have charged your cellular phone so you can maintain contact with your supports.

Protecting our community is our priority, and we are constantly assessing the information made available by weather projections to work with our municipalities and community partners to approach this weather event with a joint effort. We know that by working together with our community, we can continue to build safe and healthy communities together. Let’s all continue our efforts to prepare for potential power outage, to secure and store outdoor property to prevent damage, and remember to charge your cell phone.
