Operation Impact Saw Vehicles and Licenses Seized

(St. John’s, NL), October 13, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Traffic Services were supported by Operational Patrol Services (OPS) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police of Newfoundland and Labrador (RCMP-NL) over the long weekend during Operation Impact.

From October 8th to 11th, 2021, police services across the country focused on behaviours that put drivers, passengers and other road users at risk: impaired driving due to alcohol, drugs or fatigue, as well as aggressive driving, distracted driving, and driving without a seat belt.

The efforts across the province of Newfoundland and Labrador in connection with Operation Impact saw the issuance of 282 summary offence tickets, including nine vehicles seized and four driver’s licenses seized. The majority of the tickets issued over the long weekend were speed related, with 175 speeding tickets issued on the Northeast Avalon alone. Three operators were stopped for travelling over 50 km/h in excess of the speed limit and had their vehicles impounded from the scene. Other notable findings by the traffic initiatives this past weekend were one impaired driver, five operators without an insurance policy, and five infractions under the Motorized Snow Mobile and ATV Act.

Motor vehicle collisions kill about 2,000 Canadians, seriously injure another 10,000 people and injure about 165,000 citizens in this country each year. With the activity observed during Operation Impact over the Thanksgiving weekend, the RNC will maintain these efforts to curb behaviours which pose a risk to the safety and health of our friends, family and neighbours.
