RNC Lay Charges in Investigation of Fatal Collision

(ST. JOHN’S, NL), November 3, 2021 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Accident Investigation Division (AI) have laid charges in connection with a fatal motor vehicle collision which occurred on Torbay Bypass Road in Torbay.

On Sunday, August 8, 2021, shortly after 12:30 am., members of RNC Operational Patrol Services Division (OPS) and RNC AI responded to a single vehicle collision on Torbay Bypass Road in Torbay, between Torbay Road and Indian Meal Line. On arrival, officers located the vehicle involved, a grey Ford Ranger pickup, which had been travelling North at the time of the accident. Torbay Fire Department and Eastern Health Ambulance Department were also on scene.

The passenger of the vehicle, a 29-year-old female from Torbay, sustained serious injuries, and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The operator of the vehicle, a 28-year-old male from Mount Pearl, was taken to the hospital to be treated for non-life threatening injuries.

As a result of an investigation in to the event, on October 22, 2021, a 28-year-old male from Mount Pearl was arrested and charged with impaired operation of a motor vehicle causing death, impaired operation of a motor vehicle in excess of 80 mg, and multiple breaches of court order. The accused was also issued a driving suspension and a summary offence ticket under the Highway Traffic Act. He was released from custody to appear in Provincial Court on a later date.
