RNC Make Arrest Related to Sexual Violence

(St. John’s, NL), May 30, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s (RNC) Child Abuse and Sexual Assault (CASA) Unit has made an arrest in connection with sexual violence upon a youth in St. John’s.

On May 3, Operational Patrol officers received a report that a female youth had been assaulted by a man and the youth was receiving medical attention. The CASA Unit was engaged to investigate and determined that the man had solicited the youth on social media.

The investigation resulted in the arrest of a 22-year-old man who resides in St. John’s. He was charged with sexual assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm, making child pornography, possession of child pornography, and distribution of child pornography. The accused was released on conditions and is due to appear in Provincial Court at a later date.

The CASA Unit investigates the most sensitive of matters which include assaults against children and sexual assaults. Members of this unit are skilled investigators that use a trauma-informed approach when engaging with victims of crime. Survivors of sexual violence are encouraged to reach out for help from a trusted resource as soon as it is safe to do so.
