RNC Police Dog Tracks Down Alleged Thief

(St. John’s, NL), January 6, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Operational Patrol Services (OPS) and Police Dog Service (PDS) tracked down an alleged thief last night in St. John’s.

On Wednesday, January 5, 2022, at approximately 10:30 pm, the RNC OPS were patrolling in the east end of St. John’s when an officer observed an individual removing wheels from a vehicle on a commercial parking lot on Logy Bay Road. The patrol officer entered the parking lot to investigate further, at which time the individual began to flee the area on foot. The officer was aware that the commercial lot stored vehicles for car dealerships, and believed the individual to be attempting theft from the site. RNC OPS requested RNC PDS attend to assist with locating the suspect.

With support from RNC OPS, RNC Police Service Dog Avalon, attended the scene and initiated a track of the suspect. Minutes later, Avalon had tracked the suspect, allowing officers to take the individual in to custody without incident. RNC Forensic Identification Services attended the scene to collect any evidence.

As a result of an investigation in to the event, a 38-year-old male from St. John’s has been charged with theft under $5000.00. The accused was released to appear in Provincial Court on a later date.

The RNC ask that anyone who may have information to assist the investigation contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com.
