RNC Arrest Wanted Male Following Vehicle Theft

(St. John’s, NL), January 11, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Operational Patrol Services arrested a wanted male following a vehicle theft in St. John’s on Friday evening.

On Friday, January 7, 2022, at approximately 8:00 pm, RNC Operational Patrol Services (OPS) responded to a report of a vehicle theft on Torbay Road in St. John’s. An unattended vehicle was stolen from the parking lot of an east end gas station.

At approximately 10:40 pm, a patrol officer located the stolen vehicle in a parking lot in the area of Newfoundland Drive in St. John’s. The patrol officer parked directly behind the vehicle, blocking the vehicle in the parking space, and called for additional officers to assist.

Upon approaching the stolen vehicle, the officer observed a male in the driver’s seat. The officer identified the male to be wanted person, 25-year-old Adam WHALEN of St. John’s. Once WHALEN observed the officer at his driver side window, he attempted to shift the vehicle in to gear and leave the area. The patrol officer was able to remove WHALEN from the vehicle and he was taken in to custody.

As a result of an investigation in to these events, WHALEN has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of property obtained by crime, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, resisting arrest, escaping lawful custody, and operating a motor vehicle while prohibited. WHALEN was held in custody to appear in Provincial Court on this matter, as well as arrest warrants in effect on separate matters.
