RNC Investigating Vehicle Fires in Metro

(St. John’s, NL), September 1, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) are investigating multiple vehicle fires in St. John’s.

On Wednesday, August 31, 2022, at approximately 9:15 pm, RNC OPS responded to a report of a vehicle fire at a business on Old Pennywell Road in St. John’s. On arrival, St. John’s Regional Fire department (SJRFD) were on scene, and three trucks belonging to a lawn care business were on fire. The vehicles sustained significant fire damage.

At approximately 11:00 pm, patrol officers responded to another report of vehicle fires at a car dealership on Kenmount Road in St. John’s. SJRFD were on scene, and had notified responding officers of multiple vehicles on fire at that location. On arrival, officers confirmed five pickup trucks were on fire, and had sustained significant damage.

The RNC CID is actively investigating these events, and believe the fires to be suspicious. The investigators are seeking any information related to the fires, looking for any witnesses, or any video footage in the noted areas around the time of each event. At this stage, the RNC cannot confirm a link between the two events. There were no injuries reported in connection with the fires.
