(St. John’s, NL), November 16, 2022 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Mounted Unit will be engaged in evening patrols of the downtown area leading up to the holiday season.

Beginning on Thursday, November 17, 2022, the RNC Mounted Unit will be completing evening patrols throughout the downtown region of St. John’s. Along with supporting Operational Patrol Services, the RNC Mounted Unit are utilized to conduct crowd control, searches, extra patrol of neighbourhoods, response to disturbance and assist with traffic control.

The members of the Mounted Unit certainly understand that everyone enjoys meeting our horses, but in order to promote safety for the public, the officers, and the horses, the RNC request that the community remember this advice:

• When approaching the Mounted Unit, do not approach from behind the horse.
• Give the horse physical space.
• Do not pet or feed the horse.
• Motorists exercise caution near the Mounted Unit, and give the horses the right-of-way.

As we launch this community policing initiative, the RNC is calling on the community to get involved. We want members of our community to ‘Spot The Mounted Unit’, post a photo on your social media channels, and have a chance to win a prize.

With the start of evening Mounted Unit patrols this week, we are launching a social media contest with the hashtag, #SpotTheMountedUnit. We want our community members to photograph our Mounted Unit, wherever and whenever you see them, post it to your social media with the contest hashtag, and mention or tag the RNC social media platforms on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram. We will select a post each Monday to feature for Mounted Unit Monday, and the photographer will receive a gift card prize!

The RNC is focused on providing the highest standard of police service to our communities, building meaningful partnerships, and initiating community engagement to most effectively protect the safety and security of all.
