RNC Investigating Reports of Property Maintenance Scam

(St. John’s, NL), July 12, 2023 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Economic Crime Unit (ECU) are investigating reports of a scam involving fraudulent agreements to complete property maintenance projects.

The RNC ECU have received several reports of a scam which involves fraudulent agreements to complete home improvement or property maintenance work. Reports indicate that individuals are approaching home owners with offers to complete work related to property management of residential properties, and requesting payment or a deposit in advance of work being completed. After receiving payment, the individual does not return to complete the work. In each of the reports, the suspect has targeted senior citizens.

In light of these reports, the RNC stresses the importance of checking references, confirming identification and contact information of service providers, and refraining from making payments in advance of service. Please report any fraudulent or suspicious activity to the RNC.

The RNC requests that anyone with information connected to this scam contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can now provide information anonymously on the NL Crime Stoppers Website at www.nlcrimestoppers.com or use the P3Tips app #SayItHere
