RNC Make Arrest Connected to Homicide at Mount Pearl Residence

(St. John’s, NL), August 8, 2023 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) Criminal Investigation Division (CID) has made an arrest in connection with the death of a female in Mount Pearl.

Just after midnight on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, investigators located a 14-year-old male at a home in Mount Pearl and placed him under arrest. The 14-year-old from Mount Pearl has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with the homicide of a 65-year-old female also from Mount Pearl. The accused was held in custody to appear in Provincial Court. The RNC sends its sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased.

On Thursday, August 3, 2023, at approximately 4:15 p.m., members of the RNC Operational Patrol Services (OPS), Criminal Investigation Division (CID) and Forensic Identification Services (FIS) responded to a residence on Smallwood Drive in Mount Pearl in relation to a report of a sudden death. Upon arrival, officers confirmed that a 65-year-old female was deceased inside the home. The RNC CID referred to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to determine the cause of the death.

In consultation with the OCME, the death of the 65-year-old female from Mount Pearl was determined to be homicide. An RNC CID Major Case Management Team was engaged to investigate in collaboration with multiple divisions of the RNC. The investigation remains active, with continued efforts to gather information related to this event. Investigators are specifically seeking a blue plastic recycling bag that was believed to be discarded in the Smallwood Drive or surrounding area of Mount Pearl, encompassing Park Avenue, on Thursday, August 3. The RNC is asking area residents to check their properties, including garbage bins, and contact police if you should locate any suspicious items. Investigators continue to seek video footage, from CCTV, dash-cameras, or doorbell cameras, in the noted area as well.
