RNC Lay Charges Related to Serious Assault in St. John’s

(St. John’s, NL), January 22, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) has made an arrest following a serious assault in St. John’s.

On Saturday (Jan. 20) shortly after 5 a.m., RNC patrol officers responded to a residence on Hatcher Street in St. John’s in relation to a report of an assault that had just occurred. Upon arrival, officers located a male with injuries consistent with a stabbing. He was transported to hospital to seek medical attention, and is recovering from the injuries. Responding officers determined that a male suspect had left the area prior to their arrival. The RNC Criminal Investigation Division was engaged to investigate.

At approximately 11:30 p.m. on Saturday, officers arrested 36-year-old Justin CHIPMAN of St. John’s in connection with this event. The accused was held in custody to appear in Provincial Court on charges of aggravated assault, failure to comply with a release order, and breach of probation order.
