RNC Make Arrests Related to Vehicle Theft in St. John’s

(St. John’s, NL), January 4, 2024 – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) made two arrests related to a vehicle theft in St. John’s last night.

On Wednesday (Jan 3) shortly after 8 p.m., RNC patrol officers observed a suspicious vehicle on Harbor View Avenue in St. John’s. Patrol officers initiated a traffic safety stop with the vehicle, but the vehicle maneuvered away from the police vehicle, proceeding toward Torbay Road.

The suspect vehicle travelled across Torbay Road onto a parking lot where the vehicle collided with a snow bank and became immoveable. The driver immediately exited the vehicle and fled on foot, while a passenger remained inside the vehicle. The male operator of the vehicle was located a short time later with assistance from Seaforce of the RNC Police Dog Service.

As a result of the investigation into the event, the 60-year-old male from Dunville, who was operating the vehicle was charged criminally with possessing property obtained by crime, flight from police, dangerous driving, resisting arrest, breach of court order, as well as operating a motor vehicle while suspended under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA). The passenger, a 44-year-old male of St. John’s, was charged with possessing property obtained by crime. Both accused individuals were held in custody to appear in Provincial Court.
